I’ve painted this view of Mount Olympus from Spring Lane probably two dozen times now… and apparently I’m still not tired of it. 😂
To be fair, Olympus doesn’t exactly make it easy to move on.
Every season changes the mountain, but fall might be my favorite. The maples start turning red across the foothills and, when that last bit of evening light hits the mountain, the whole thing can look like it’s on fire. 🔥🍁
So here I am, painting it again.
This new piece was painted for the 2026 Plein Air Holladay competition and will be on display this weekend at Relics Framemakers & Gallery.

Calf Creek has always been more than a beautiful place to me.
It was one of my dad’s favorite places in the world. We came down here nearly every year, and this canyon holds so many memories of him, of our family, and of time spent together.
Coming back with my paints feels different now. I’m not just trying to capture the cliffs, the light, or the water. I’m painting a place that is woven into my own story.
Some landscapes are beautiful because of what you see.
Others are beautiful because of what you remember.
Calf Creek is both for me.

🏔️ MONTANA RESIDENCY • DAY 3 🦆🎨
What a fantastic day in the Centennial Valley!
I had the chance to head out with the amazing wildlife research staff working next door to the Taft-Nicholson Center and spend part of the day birdwatching and seeing firsthand how they study, capture, tag, and release ducks as part of their ongoing research. Such a cool experience to see the science and conservation work happening out here in this incredible landscape.
Later, I traded binoculars for a projector and had the opportunity to give a presentation on creativity and the ideas that have shaped the way I approach making art.
One of my favorite ideas comes from Jasper Johns:
“Take an object. Do something to it. Do something else to it.”
Sometimes creativity starts simply by doing something, responding to what happens, and then doing something to that.
🦆 Bird research, 🎨 art, 🏔️ Montana, and a room full of creative minds. Not a bad Day 3!

Day Two at Taft. 🏔️
When I told legend Rita Wright that I’d been awarded this residency, she gave me one piece of advice: “Live in the moment. Really soak it in.”
So that’s what I’m trying to do.
I’m still finishing two commissions, so I haven’t painted outside yet. Instead, I spent today walking, exploring, and getting the lay of the land. Every one of these photographs was taken within half a mile of the Taft-Nicholson Center.
My favorite moment was early this morning, when advection fog crept off the lake and slowly covered the valley floor. It lasted maybe 45 minutes, and then it was gone.
I’m realizing how different a residency feels from a painting competition. There’s no clock ticking and no pressure to immediately find the painting. I can wander, look, come back tomorrow, and paint whatever catches my attention.
Maybe I’ll paint tomorrow. Maybe I’ll just keep looking.
For now, I’m taking Rita’s advice and soaking it all in.
And for anyone wondering if I’m actually getting any work done 😂, the last two videos and photo are the commissions I’m currently finishing. 🎨

🏔️🎨 I MADE IT TO MONTANA!
I’m thrilled to have been awarded a two-week artist residency at the University of Utah’s Taft-Nicholson Center in the ridiculously beautiful Centennial Valley.
For the next two weeks, my only real responsibility is to wander around Montana and paint things. Somehow, this counts as work. 😂
I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity and plan to make the most of every minute.

What a great time I had last week painting in the Teton Valley! 🎨🏔️
I spent the week chasing mountain light, rainstorms, old barns, tractors, and a little roadside Americana. From painting high in the Tetons to watching storms roll across the valley, there was no shortage of inspiration.
Plein air painting is always an adventure. Sometimes you’re standing on the side of a mountain with an easel, and sometimes you realize you’ve reached the age where your painting setup starts looking suspiciously like a La-Z-Boy with a palette attached. 😂
It was great seeing all the paintings hanging together at the end of the week. Each one brings back a different moment from a wonderful week in Idaho.
I’ll be back, probably with the chair. 😎🎨

Honored to receive 1st Place at the South Jordan Plein Air Competition! 🏆 It means a lot, especially with so many incredibly talented artists painting alongside me.
This piece was a bit more of an adventure than usual. The morning started with pouring rain, and it almost looked like the event would be canceled. I decided to paint anyway, completing this piece in just two hours between the storms.
I ended up liking the composition so much that I returned later in sunny weather and painted the exact same scene again. It’s always fascinating how completely different the same place can feel under different light and weather.
Painting outdoors is one of my favorite parts of being an artist. The changing light, wind, rain, and unexpected challenges are all part of the experience, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

After two weeks of chasing light, dodging afternoon thunderstorms, and trying to convince my paintings to cooperate, the Wasatch Plein Air Paradise is wrapping up!
I’ve been lucky enough to sell a few paintings, take home an award, and spend the last two weeks painting alongside some truly world class artists. I even had one painting blow off a hill, land in the dirt, and get completely washed out by mineral spirits. I ended up repainting the whole thing… and somehow it survived long enough to sell! 😂
Every year I leave inspired, humbled, and with a fresh list of things I need to get better at.
A huge thank you to the Midway Association and everyone behind the scenes who puts so much heart into this event. You make it one of my favorite weeks of the year.

Today was one of those days that reminds me why I love plein air painting.
I had the chance to paint side by side with Günther Haidenthaller whose work I admire tremendously. Spending the day talking art, swapping ideas, and chasing the changing light on Bridal Veil falls made for a fantastic day.
I’ll have nine brand new paintings in this year’s show, and I’d love to see you there. The highlight is the Quick Paint and Auction on the Fourth of July at the Midway Town Hall. Today’s plein air adventure on Memorial Hill in Midway, Utah: five hours of battling wind, getting rained on, and painting without an umbrella because it would’ve become a hang glider. 🌬️🌧️
Then, just as I was finishing, a huge gust launched my entire setup into the air. It crashed, and the mineral spirits splashed perfectly across my painting, melting away hours of brushwork in seconds.
Some days the landscape paints itself… today it painted back. 😂🎨

Plein air painting at Willard Bay last Friday nearly turned into a rodeo.
My heart skipped a beat more than a few times when a couple of bulls decided they were very interested in what I was doing. One minute I was focused on capturing the evening light, and the next I was wondering if my easel was about to become part of a livestock obstacle course.
This isn’t my first encounter with the hazards of painting on location. Over the years I’ve nearly been run off by livestock, and I’ve even had farmers in Chester Utah try to chase me away with tractors. But being nearly stampeded by bulls is definitely a new development.
People often imagine plein air painting as a peaceful experience surrounded by beautiful scenery. Most days it is. Other days you’re keeping one eye on the painting and one eye on several thousand pounds of curious beef heading your direction.
The painting survived. The painter survived.🤠🎨🐂

What a great opening tonight at Alma Gallery for Salon des Refusés. It was so fun to be there and see so many people come out, talk, look closely, and share the room together.
Empty Chairs at Empty Tables Oil and Buttons on panel.
In the amber light of early morning, migrant workers gather, hoping for a day’s labor to support their families. The moment feels ordinary, even hopeful—but beneath it lies uncertainty. For one, the day ended before it began.
At the center stands a figure formed from buttons, drawn from the artist’s family—objects once used to hold clothing, and lives, together. Here, they shape the absence of the man who is no longer there. He represents the worker who stood in this place yesterday and is gone this morning, removed through immigration enforcement.
Surrounded by the symbols of the American dream, the remaining men wait, their futures uncertain. The title reflects what lies beyond the frame: families at home, and chairs that will remain empty.
The show goes from May 1 to June 20, 2026.

Frida Kahlo lived through pain, illness, and heartbreak, yet she turned it all into something honest and fearless. She didn’t hide her life, she painted it, like a diary written in color.
This piece reflects that same idea. When life gets hard, I paint. The brush becomes a way to work through it all, to record both the beauty and the struggle. Nothing held back. Just life, laid down in strokes.

There are places in the West that almost don’t look real.
Dead Horse Point is one of them.
From the rim you look down nearly 2,000 feet as the Colorado River bends through the canyon like a piece of green glass cutting through miles of red stone. The cliffs catch the sun and start glowing with oranges, violets, and deep shadows.
My friend Bob DeWitt commissioned me to paint this view for him, and it was a joy trying to capture that feeling of standing on the edge of that enormous silence.
Utah never runs out of landscapes that make a painter want to pick up the brush again.

Dinner for Three is a self portrait set in Tokyo, where I sit across from the legendary Futakuchi-onna, the woman with a hidden mouth at the back of her head. From the front she appears gentle, composed, almost forgettable. But beneath the surface is a ferocious appetite. This painting explores the tension between civility and hunger, beauty and menace, the visible self and the hidden one. In a city that dazzles and devours, the meal becomes a metaphor for ambition, desire, and the quiet monsters we carry with us.
This piece will be on view in All Shapes and Sizes at JKR Gallery. Opening reception this Friday evening from 6 to 9 PM.

I am deeply honored to be included in the 39th Annual Sears Invitational at the Sears Art Museum. To exhibit in such a prestigious museum, surrounded by so many extraordinary artists, is something I never take lightly. Utah’s art community is strong, generous, and full of vision. I’m grateful to stand among them.
The Invitational runs February 14 through March 28, 2026, and the museum is open Monday through Saturday, 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. If you’re near st. George, come see the show. It’s a powerful collection of voices and landscapes that celebrate this place we call home.
And on a more personal note… this weekend has been especially meaningful. Spending this time in Zion with my Valentine and my love has been such a gift. This is our fifth Valentine’s together, and somehow each one gets better than the last. I’m the luckiest man alive.

Standing in front of The West Temple in Zion, I’m reminded why I paint.
The light here never repeats itself. One morning it whispers in cool blues. The next it sets the stone on fire. You can’t control it. You respond to it.
Painting in Zion and Utah’s national parks has shaped me as an artist. These landscapes demand humility, boldness, and attention. They don’t need us. But they invite us.
Grateful to be part of the Sears Invitational and to bring this love of the land into that space.

Tonight’s opening at the Holladay art show was pure joy 🎨✨
So good connecting with friends and family, soaking up that buzzing gallery energy, and seeing my work out in the wild. I was honestly pleasantly surprised that all three paintings I submitted were accepted into the show, and I’m feeling pretty good about how they turned out.
Extra special getting to see Uncle Mike, Aunt Karen, Cousin Lexus, and her husband Jeff. Huge congrats to Jeff for taking third place for his yak photo 🦬👏 Well deserved.

I just found out I’ve been ACCEPTED into the Driggs Plein Air Festival!!!
Last year this was hands-down my favorite place to paint, and apparently the Tetons and I are officially “seeing each other again.”

Mailbox surprise today 📬💥
A postcard showed up announcing “coming up next August!” and suddenly I’m time-traveling like a freight train with a sense of humor.
It instantly reminded me of what a fantastic time that trip was. Sunshine, rails, paint fumes, and the kind of art luck you don’t dare ask for. All three paintings sold before the opening of the show, one took Best of Show.

Many months.
Thousands of buttons.
One very patient wave.
Ashlee and Brayden commissioned The Great Wave… but make it button couture. What followed was a slow-motion tsunami of sorting, gluing, re-sorting, questioning life choices, and trusting that Hokusai would forgive me.
Delivery day verdict: ecstatic humans, wave safely contained, no flooding reported.

I’ve been working on this painting on and off for six months. “Holding Peace” oil on panel.
The mountains have been repainted more times than I’ll admit.
The sky got a couple revisions.
And the face… four, maybe five tries and still asking questions.
Originally, he was holding a spear.
With everything going on lately, that didn’t feel right anymore, so I changed it to a peace pipe.
Maybe it’s wishful thinking.
Maybe it’s stubborn hope.
It’s been accepted into the holiday art show, so here’s hoping this version finally lets me call it finished.

It’s always an honor when a painting leaves the studio to live a public life.
I just learned from Four Lemons gallery that my piece “Under the Blue Umbrellas”, a painting of the Cotton Bottom, has been purchased by Holladay City for their permanent public collection and will be displayed in City Hall.
Knowing a work will be encountered in the everyday rhythm of a community, passed by, paused with, maybe remembered years later, feels quietly profound. Art doesn’t always need a spotlight. Sometimes it just needs a good wall and a steady stream of human lives moving past it.
Grateful for the trust, the support, and the chance to contribute something lasting to a shared civic space.

2025. What a year Easily the most exciting year of my art career yet.

And the best part? Sharing it all with my muse Erin and our studio puppy Vinny, who turns ONE year old today 🐶💙 The absolute cutest. This drawing is charcoal on plaster. I’m endlessly grateful that Erin agreed to get him. Watching her experience her first puppy love and seeing how completely infatuated she is with him has been pure joy.

🚂 Opening Tonight at JKC Gallery | Provo 🎨
Tonight I’ll have three of my seven 2025 train oil paintings on view as part of A New Page at JKC Gallery. All three are painted in Happy Valley, Utah, with Mount Timpanogos as the backdrop.
Trains run deep in my family. My grandfather was a train driver. My great-grandfather repaired locomotive engines in Switzerland. As a kid, I rode the Heber Creeper many times with my dad, sitting beside him while he grinned ear to ear. Years later we found old family videos from a Switzerland trip, and about 75% of the footage was trains.
I love traveling by train and feel lucky to live next to a station so I can ride straight into the city. No parking. No cars. Just motion and landscape.

This year we welcomed a new family member with radar-dish ears and a doctorate in stealing hearts 🐶✨
Meet Vinnie, our Frenchie Boston mix and full-time joy distributor.
The plot twist: Erin used to be afraid of dogs. Now she’s deep in first-puppy-love territory. To mark the moment, I did this quick charcoal study in one sitting, capturing her and Vinnie so she could take a piece of her puppy with her to work. He may not be there in person, but his presence (and ears) absolutely are.
And the best part? The entire neighborhood adores him. Random kids knock on the door asking, “Can Vinnie come out to play?” Tiny dog. Big social life.
Watching these two together has been one of the sweetest, funniest surprises of the year. Somehow, Vinnie makes Christmas feel even more like Christmas 🎄🐾

What a great year it’s been. The very best part of it all has been doing the adventure with Erin. 💙
These photos were taken at Dead Horse Point and Moab earlier this month. An incredible view and a perfect reminder to pause and take it all in.
Looking back, I’m incredibly grateful. Three solo shows, multiple first-place awards, new gallery relationships, and the chance to meet so many amazing collectors along the way. And of course, plenty of studio time with my loyal assistant, Vinny, our Frenchton puppy, keeping things lively. 🐾

🎨✨ What an inspiring night!
I had such a wonderful time at Rita Wright’s presentation “Friberg and Fairbanks: Artists at Home in Holladay” last night at Holladay City Hall. Rita — the former Director of the Springville Museum of Art — shared incredible insights about Arnold Friberg and Avard Fairbanks, two legendary Utah artists who always came back home to Holladay.
One of my favorite moments was meeting Arnold Friberg’s granddaughter, who told me that the reason he painted all of his Book of Mormon prophets with those bulging superhero muscles was because The Friend Magazine actually commissioned them and wanted them to look like heroes! 💪🎨
I met so many great people, and talking with Rita herself was such a treat. I even painted during her talk — it’s how I stay focused and soak in the stories. Here’s the piece I created while she spoke.
What an awesome evening — full of art, history, inspiration, and connection.

🇹🇼✨ Just got back from an amazing trip to Taiwan — the place I called home for nearly 23 years. What a homecoming!
Even though I didn’t get to see my daughter (she was off on vacation), it was still an incredible time reconnecting with friends, exploring, and eating way too much good food. I gained six pounds — and every bite was worth it! 😄🍜
Highlights included visiting the National Palace Museum, attending Art Taipei 2025, and painting gouache plein air studies around the island. Seeing so many inspiring artists’ works at Art Taipei lit a creative spark that will keep me painting for months.

What an awesome night at the 39th Annual Spiritual & Religious Art of Utah at the Springville Museum of Art! 🙌
It was such an honor to show my button piece among so many inspiring works — the response was amazing! People said they’d never seen anything like it and told me to keep going with this project. Felt great to bring some texture and variety to a show full of stunning paintings. 🎨✨

From Buttons to Blessing
I’m deeply honored that my “Madonna with Child Haloed in Buttons” was accepted into the 39th Annual Spiritual & Religious Art of Utah at the Springville Museum of Art. The opening reception is tonight, Wednesday, Oct 15, 6:30–8:30 PM—I’ll be there and would love to see you!

🏔️ First Place!! Holladay Plein Air 🎨✨
Still can’t believe it — my Mount Olympus painting took First Place! Painting in the Holladay area is always pure magic — the mountains, the light, the memories.
Every time I see Mount Olympus, I think of my amazing wife Erin ❤️ She once had the most epic view of that mountain from her back patio in Holladay. Then she moved with me to Sandy — gave up that view and doubled her commute — just so I could have more space for my art making.
Erin, you’re my muse, my mountain, and my reason for it all. I love you so much. 💕

Hey everybody, I need a title for this painting of Mount Olympus—please drop your ideas in the comments!
The thing that intrigued me most about this piece, now on my second night working on it, was the way the golden sunset reflected in the windows across the valley. Tiny squares of light—like little suns clinging to the mountainside.
It’s interesting how in America, people love building their homes *on* the mountains, chasing the view and that evening glow. When I lived in Taiwan, it was the opposite—everyone wanted to be close to the city, and few dared to build in the mountains for fear of landslides.
It’s funny how geography and culture shape where we feel safe, and yet the mountains always seem to call some of us home.

"THE GENTLE SAVIOR" — FOUND HIS FOREVER HOME, Over a year ago, Jon Willison saw The Gentle Savior oil painting for the first time at a Faith Matters gathering. He told me he couldn’t stop thinking about it ever since. This week, he finally reached out and asked, “Is it still available?”
When the painting arrived at their home in Colorado, Jon said it gave him goosebumps as he opened it. Moments like that remind me why I paint — because the Spirit works through art. It stays with you. You can’t forget the way it makes you feel when you first see it, or when it finds its place in your home.
As I painted The Gentle Savior, I wanted to capture Jesus as I feel Him — real, natural, and ethnically true to who He was — yet radiant with divine light. I know He lives. He is my Savior, and through Him, we can return to our Father in Heaven.
I’m deeply grateful to be an artist-disciple, striving to create images that bring people closer to Christ. Knowing this painting now lives with Jon and Dorsey Willison in Colorado, where it will continue to inspire faith and peace, fills my heart with gratitude and joy.

This work is an homage to one of Raphael’s classic Madonnas, reimagined through thousands of antique buttons. I’m honored to share that this is my third consecutive year being accepted into this remarkable exhibition. 🙏✨

Some of you may not know this, but I’m actually a Swiss citizen 🇨🇭 I was born in Zürich, where my father was from, and moved to the U.S. when I was three. Half my family—my aunts and uncles—still live in Switzerland, so whenever I visit it’s something truly special.
In 2017, on one of those visits, I didn’t want to come empty-handed. In one evening, I painted more than a dozen small portraits of Jesus Christ to give as gifts. 🙏✨ I just found some time-lapse videos of those paintings, and it’s amazing to relive that moment.
Painting Him is never easy, but always rewarding. I strive to show Christ as He may have truly appeared—olive skin, curly brown hair, and deep brown eyes. He walked this Earth, and I know He will walk it again.
I’m grateful to share His presence through art. ❤️ Exciting news: my button piece Madonna with Child Halo in Buttons was just accepted into the Springville Art Museum’s Spiritual & Religious Art of Utah show! Can’t wait to share photos soon.

Robert Fuerer is a Utah-based artist known for original oil paintings, plein air landscapes, narrative artwork, and award-winning button mosaics.
