"Sunday night special" By Robert Fuerer oil on panel. My favorite class at Purchase College was Painting Four, taught by Professor Michael Torlen. Sunday night was the last night before class, so all my classmates were hard at work in the studios until dawn Monday morning. During class, Micheal would discuss each painting's strengths and weaknesses for a few minutes. As long as the painting was still wet, Mr. Torrlen would stick his pinky onto the canvas and wipe it on his blue apron in the middle of his chest. I always imagined an Indian warrior taking a fresh scalp as he wiped over and over till his finger was clean. Since we all had been working the night before his finger was always wet with paint. As he examined the color on his finger, he repeated, "this one also looks like a Sunday night special." Perhaps he was disappointed that we hadn't been working on the piece continuously the whole week before class so it could dry properly. Or maybe he was collecting a piece of every painting his students made. Regardless of what it was, I found it to be very entertaining.
Michael Torlen was able to see more talent and ability within me than I saw in me and bring it out. He shaped me into the artist I am today. #purchasecollege #michaeltorlen #tokyo #artistsoninstagram...
“New York’s Not My Home” oil on canvas by Robert Fuerer 2007.
In cities, there are millions of people who are all alone together. City dwellers are noisy, but many are lonely; rural dwellers are quiet, but few are lonely. In order to benefit from both worlds, I have always preferred to live near cities but in rural areas. Although I'm close enough to restaurants, museums and the arts, the nights away from all the noise and chaos are so calming for me. Erin and I are even thinking about investing in a cabin to get away even further. Do you have a dream place you'd like to live? #nycart #newyorkstreets #selfportrait #oilpainting...
“Rooster”, oil on panel 2015 by Robert Fuerer, I’m up at 4:30 AM looking at KSL.com (Utah’s Craigslist) and I have realized that there are a ton of free roosters online for good reason. The funny thing is despite not being farmers or gardeners, most of us still have a sense of farm nostalgia, whether real or imagined: a secret yearning for a life where roosters crow in the yard. I lived on a farm for 21 years in Taiwan. In a similar fashion to countless Disney films, I awoke to the sound of a rooster crowing early in the morning every day. But guess what? They don't do it just do it once, and the damned male chicken's yawp is one of the most barbaric sounds in nature, and It keeps coming and coming for hours and hours good luck sleeping in after a late night painting session. But did you know most sane roosters only crow when they see light? If you put him in the dark, he won't crow. My paintbrush is crowing with pride now that I have seen the light. #rooster #cockadoodledoo #oilportrait #chickenart #roosters #roostersofinstagram #roosterlove #animalart #animalprint #animalpainting #robertfuerer_artist...
“扳手勁 Ah Chu Ba” monotype 2008, by Robert Fuerer. Face your darkest parts, confront them and forgive. "If you wrestle with your demons, your angels will sing. In monotypes, the artist creates exactly one print, rather than multiples, as in other printmaking processes. This is due to the process of making a monotype.
An artist makes a monotype by applying paint to a plate - which can be metal, glass, plexiglas. Paint is transferred to the paper by pressing the plate against it. The printing can be done with a printing press or sometimes by hand. In My Daughter's Eyes by Robert Fuerer, soon following my mother's death, I painted this. It is inevitable that you will lose someone you love, and your heart will be broken badly, and the bad news is that you will never fully recover. But this is also the good news. It's like they live forever in a broken heart that won't seal back up. In the end, you come through. As if you have a broken leg that never fully heals, but you can learn to dance with a limp. "Guardians," by Robert Fuerer oil on panel. 2019
Throughout antiquity, angels and tutelary spirits have undergone many changes. It is believed that guardian angels protect whoever God assigns them to. In the New Testament, there are many examples like the angel who succored Christ in the garden, and the angel who delivered St. Peter from prison. In Acts 12:12-15. I know I have guardian angels. Often, I feel them. As I paint this landscape, they stand watch like samurai, even as I do the smallest of tasks.

I had a dream that my Swiss father Vincent Fuerer was a sheep farmer in the Alps. What an amazing person he was. He sacrificed everything for his family. 'On the Way home' is a new series I have created that captures all the sacrifices one has to make when leaving home.
Kah-pool, 2019 by Robert Fuerer oil on panel. A road trip gives the family a chance to spend time together and annoy each other in exciting and new locations. Just kidding, I love road trips. Among the few forms of travel where it's all about the experience: the people, the stories, and those moments that are hard to describe to someone who isn't there.

Pugbert, 2018 by Robert Fuerer oil on panel. In the last decade, most of my art has dealt with daily relationship issues. I have learned a lot from my failed marriage. Like, there is no slavery in marriage. It is a relationship based on love and freedom. Both partners are free from the other and, therefore, able to love the other. If either partner exerts control over the other, love cannot exist. Love can only exist when both partners have freedom. Live and learn.
Numbness, 2018 by Robert Fuerer oil on panel. As a result of a massive typhoon in Taiwan in 2009, I lost almost everything I owned. Two weeks after the flood, I throw away everything, including our submerged cars and scooters. It prompted me to create a series of paintings about mother nature and her earthly disasters. As a representation of loss and life never being the same again, I removed entire sections of the completed painting. We were all grateful that the only death of that week was on our family farm, where 80 pigs perished.
The Bridge of Sighs, 2016 by Robert Fuerer oil on panel. Inspired by the loss of my mother to Alzheimer's and dreams, I made a whole series of paintings where I removed sections like this, which represented memories lost or dreams half-remembered.

‘Garbageman’ oil on canvas 2007 The death of people still alive angers me. Their eyes are open, yet they see nothing in the world. I was once dead. This painting is the manifestation of my paradigm shift. Previously, as a flâneur, I painted Time Square billboards and street performers on corners. But after a few months I finally noticed a red suit come into view and it opened my eyes to the possibilities surrounding me and I created my first truly breakthrough painting. Seeing the world for the first time, I realized then and there that art is nothing more than the way we see the world.
PS: This painting was stolen right off the wall once when it was in a group show in New York. Fortunately, I noticed it was missing and immediately after ran down the road to find it. By the grace of God, I found the thief about half a mile away, tore the painting from his hands, and confronted him. I asked him what the hell he was thinking about stealing art? he said that he “thought this painting would look awesome in his apartment.” Open your eyes and live. To me, the hallmarks of truly enlightened people are being curious and being teachable. We need to wake up every morning and approach our craft as though we are still beginners. There’s always room to be a bit better at color theory, finding dark to light values, or learning the perfect aperture and ND filter combination for a better portrait at the “golden hour”. For this reason Every year I seek out at least one professional around the world to mentor me in all my creative endeavors. These photos were from one of my annual trips in 2006 when I hired the master draftsman Zhang Jianqiao of Mainland China to teach me private lessons focusing on drawing facial features. Although private lessons are extremely expensive around 150 USD per hr. Whenever I get the chance to learn one-on-one, I am always satisfied with the results because teachers are never reluctant to share their secret techniques that could take you a lifetime to discover on your own. These golden nuggets can be life-changing and speed up your progression in more ways than you can imagine. This year, I will be learning advanced color techniques from David Dibble in Utah. Dibble is incredible artist, he worked for Blue Sky for many years, creating color schemes for our children's favorite animated movies. In some of my recent works, it appears that my paintings are either overly saturated, like my recent Japanese series, or too light and dark, like my New York Garbageman series. Without a doubt, I'm really looking forward to learning more about colors from a true master. “Know art, Know life” You can follow David's work on Instagram @dibbleart #dibbleart #lifelonglearner #artlessons #beteachable #hunger4knowledge #lifelonglearner #portraitdrawing #portraitsketch #art@robertfuerer_artist
Grandparents provide children with a plethora of the essentials they need most. They provide comfort, lessons in life, unconditional love, kindness, patience, humor, and most importantly, ice cream and cookies. My favorite memories are from Grandmas' house in Orem. Oh, how I miss them, but know their legacy lives on through me and my siblings. I painted this oil on canvas portrait for My Grandma on April 24, 2016. She held it so tightly in the last years of her life. In the end, it was all that she took to her rest home from the plush house she left behind. It brings me great joy to know that my God-given talent brought some comfort to her as she waited to return and be with grandpa. ‘Fast Life, Death Soon’ oil on Panel 2019. Instead of just smelling the roses, one must learn to stop, contemplate and appreciate the weeds in life as well. Many times, I see people using their phones and it makes me shudder. As if they didn't take a photo at every stop to prove they went on a trip, then it's as if they didn't go at all. Ironically, I guess that's what the Instabook platforms are all about. Take a look at me, me, me. I have seen groups touring together and witness that the moment they capture the image that proves they went then they want to run to the next place. People it’s time to float in a lake, lay in a hammock, play a bit of chess. Cows, stop, life is short.

‘Lamenting the Artist’ Sometimes I look at the painting I have just finished and think to myself “Dang this thing looks so ugly”. But then I remember that some of the most moving paintings I've seen in museums around the world weren't beautiful, per say, but they were honest and conveyed the feelings the artist must have had when they created them. For me art should make you feel something, not just look nice. So in my search for imputing feeling into my pieces I’m bound to make some pieces that are sub par or ugly. How does one paint one's own death? This is my first effort. It is what it is. At the time my mother had just died and all of a sudden my own mortality seemed so fragile. So this is an attempt to convey that fear of death. It’s OK though, making mistakes in life or art by trying is of greater worth than doing nothing. My favorite Dali quote is “Have no fear of perfection - you'll never reach it.”

‘Rabbit Fuerer’2021, Having pets around helps ease the solitary nature of art-making. The problem with keeping pets in the studio is that their feathers and fur get stuck into your paintings. These four large oil paintings were commissioned by @jshairsalonks a few years ago, and boy do they look amazing hanging in their hair salon studio.
